Markdown is a lightweight plain-text formatting syntax created by John Gruber in 2004. It converts to HTML and is the standard language for GitHub READMEs, documentation sites (GitBook, Docusaurus), and content management systems.
CommonMark is a strict, standardized Markdown spec. GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) extends it with tables, task lists, strikethrough, and auto-linking. Our preview tool supports GFM.
